The Charan Paduka

Lakshmi's feet, turned inward, the way they are painted at the threshold so she walks into the house and not out of it. They sit on a lotus medallion with a crown of petals fanning above, and a garland of coins runs around the plateau below. The whole piece is low and wide, a scalloped altar that reads from above as much as from the front. One tea light sits at the centre of the front edge, in a lotus cup.

Craftsmanship

Real metal, formed over the sculpted shape rather than cast, so the toe rings and the flower on each sole stay legible. The metal is bonded to the surface, not painted or plated, so it will not chip or rub off. Raised antique gold against a blackened ground, with scrollwork running the length of the skirt.

Dimensions and weights are approximate. Each piece is made and finished by hand, so small variations are normal.

Choosing a size

Large: the threshold on Diwali night among the diyas, the centre of a festive table where it is seen from all sides, an entryway console.

Small: a mandir or pooja shelf, a bedside, a doorway ledge. Low and wide at either size, so it never blocks what sits behind it.

Both sizes take the same 38 mm tea light, so the flame is identical. On the large it is one element on a wide altar; on the small it sits nearer the centre of the piece, closer to the way a diya reads.

Gifting

A Dhanteras and Lakshmi Pooja gift that stays out the rest of the year. The charan at the door is the oldest way of asking her in, so the piece suits a griha pravesh, a housewarming and a wedding.

Care

Wipe clean with a soft dry cloth. Do not immerse in water. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
