The Toran
A toran goes over the door at Diwali. This one stands on the table instead. Two carved pillars carry शुभ on the left and लाभ on the right, a lintel runs between them hung with eleven mango leaves, a lotus opens at the crown, and a lotus medallion swings in the middle of the doorway. A kalash sits at the centre of the base with wheat sheaves either side. Two tea lights sit on the base, one beneath each pillar, so the light comes up through the arch rather than down onto it.
Craftsmanship
Real metal, formed over the sculpted shape rather than cast, so the Devanagari on the शुभ and लाभ plaques stays crisp and every mango leaf keeps its veining. The metal is bonded to the surface, not painted or plated, so it will not chip or rub off. Raised antique gold against a blackened ground, with a beaded border running the length of the base.

Choosing a size
Large: an entrance console or shoe cabinet by the front door, the threshold on Diwali night, the centre of a festive table.
Small: a shop counter, a work desk, a mandir or pooja shelf.
Both sizes take the same 38 mm tea lights, so the flames are identical. On the large they light the arch from a distance; on the small they sit closer together and fill it.
Gifting
Shubh Labh is what gets written either side of the door at Diwali, so this is the piece for anyone moving in. A Diwali and Dhanteras gift that suits a griha pravesh, a new home, and a new shop or office.
Care
Wipe clean with a soft dry cloth. Do not immerse in water. Never leave a burning candle unattended, and keep the flame clear of the leaf work above it.
