The Piece

Nine petals opened into a fan, each one outlined in raised gold with stepped lines set inside it, rising behind a pocket that holds a stack of napkins upright and facing out. A half sun disc sits at the centre where the petals meet. The pocket front is a charcoal panel inside a stepped frame, with a lotus at its middle between two fine rules. The whole thing stands on a stepped base with cut corners.

It earns its place on a table that gets laid every day, not only the one laid for guests.

Craftsmanship

Real metal, formed over the sculpted shape rather than cast, so every petal keeps its edge and the stepped lines stay crisp instead of filling in. The metal is bonded to the surface, not painted, so it will not chip, flake or peel. Raised gold, buffed back by hand, against a blackened ground.

Built to last

UV-protected and weather-treated after finishing. It holds its colour in direct sun and through the monsoon, so a table by a window or on a covered verandah is no risk to it. No fading, no rust bleed, no repainting.

Dimensions and weights are approximate. Each piece is made and finished by hand, so small variations are normal.

On the table

The stepped base is the full footprint of the piece, so the fan stands square and the pocket stays level as napkins are taken from it. Nothing to fix, nothing to assemble. It holds paper napkins and folded cloth ones equally well, and takes cards or envelopes just as happily if you would rather use it on a console.

Where it works

In the middle of the dining table, on a kitchen island, on a sideboard beside the serving dishes, on the console by the front door for whatever comes in. Anywhere a small stack needs to be reachable and look deliberate.

A useful gift. It starts working the day it lands on a table, and it is the kind of thing a household leaves out rather than puts away. Works well for a housewarming, a griha pravesh, a wedding, and an anniversary.

Care

Wipe with a soft dry cloth. No metal polish or scouring, the dark ground is meant to stay dark.
