The Design

An open lattice that echoes the texture of fossilised coral, all irregular holes and thickened ribs with no repeating unit anywhere in it. The long shallow shape suits a console top or the centre of a dining table, where the gaps in the metal throw small shadows across the surface underneath.

Craftsmanship

An electroformed piece. The lattice is sculpted first and metal is laid onto that core layer upon layer until the sculpted form is solid metal throughout, irregular holes and thickened ribs and all. Hand antiquing in India comes last, gathering in the hollows while the raised ribs keep their brightness, which is what makes the texture legible. Each tray is worked individually, so the depth of tone shifts a little from one to the next.
