The Design

A betta fish caught mid turn, its fins fanned into an openwork pattern of fine ribs and curves. The cut outs let the surface below show through, so on a console or coffee table it reads as a small sculpture first and a tray second.

Craftsmanship

The fish is electroformed. It is sculpted as a core first, then metal is deposited onto that core layer by layer until the fins and fine ribs of the original sculpture stand in solid metal. Antiquing is done by hand in India at the end, settling into the recesses and leaving the raised ribs and edges bright, which is what gives the fins their depth. Because the work is done piece by piece, no two trays come out quite the same.
